Case Work Premieres at the Denver Art Museum
View projectJan 21, 2016
On January 24th, Allied Works’ traveling exhibition entitled Case Work: Studies in Form, Space and Construction, opened at the Denver Art Museum. The event was marked by a sold-out keynote address by Brad Cloepfil to discuss the inspiration and principles behind the works presented.
The exhibition features over 100 concept drawings, models and studies developed throughout Allied Works’ 21-year history. More than a proxy or evocation of a building project, these artifacts serve as a vehicle for the exploration of materials, assembly, space and perception; they are a vital part of the design process that serves to inform and expand the firms’ architectural projects and broader creative practice.
The installation is composed of ten handmade cases or ‘toolboxes’ suspended in a light-gauge steel framework. Each explores unique operations such as unfolding, binding, embedding and illuminating, and is inspired by the specific artifacts and investigations it houses. This custom display armature serves as a means of extension and dialogue with the viewer and the exhibit space itself, engaging the intellect, the body, the hand, and the eye.
Case Work was developed in partnership with Dean Sobel, Director of the Clyfford Still Museum, which was completed by Allied Works in 2011, and Brian Ferriso, Director of the Portland Art Museum, which will host the exhibition in June of 2016. An accompanying catalog, published by Metropolis Books, will be available at the exhibiting institutions and online.
