University of Michigan Museum of Art Opens
Jun 7, 2008
The newly restored and expanded University of Michigan Museum of Art formally opened to the public in May of 2009. The Allied Works designed expansion effectively doubles the size of the institution and forges new connections between the creative work it supports, the landscape and the community. The museum’s 40,000 sf current home, the 1908 Alumni Memorial Hall, has been completely renovated and integrated with the new 53,000 sf addition. Named for arts patrons Maxine and Stuart Frankel, the addition incorporates three new gallery wings, a new public lobby, classrooms and auditorium. New landscaped courts create space for art installations and outdoor events, and a ‘vertical gallery’ creates a dynamic space that unites and integrates UMMA’s diverse and inspiring collection.
