Allied Works Architecture at the Venice Architecture Biennale
Oct 25, 2012
In July, Allied Works was invited to participate in an international exhibition for this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale. The exhibition was organized by friends and fellow architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien and involved the shipping of 36 boxes to collaborators all over the world. Entitled “Wunderkammer,” the installation focuses on our inspirations and shared dialogue as artists and creators in the built environment. The 36 boxes were filled by each participant and were subsequently curated by Williams+Tsien and installed in a centuries-old warehouse in the Arsenale, the shipbuilding district that helped Venice become a global naval power.
Allied Works’ box is an homage and assemblage of native materials from the Pacific Northwest – laurelwood, obsidian, volcanic stone and agate. Each has been worked or shaped to show the dialogue between material, craft and intention that lies at the heart of architectural practice.
