Allied Works invited to envision new cultural buildings in Columbus, Ohio
Nov 11, 2012
In October 2012, Allied Works was invited by the City of Columbus to participate in a design competition for two major cultural institutions - a new Kunsthalle and Ohio Veterans Memorial Museum. The projects will be located on the Scioto Peninsula, a prominent 90-acre site immediately across from the downtown core. The projects are intended to catalyze new economic activity and redevelopment of the Peninsula, to provide new cultural offerings for residents and visitors of all ages, and to honor the service of Ohio Veterans from the War of 1812 to the present day.
Allied Works’ concept begins with a new masterplan for the Scioto Peninsula redevelopment, which capitalizes on key connections to the surrounding city and existing landscape, historic and cultural assets. Within this framework, the Kunsthalle and adjacent Artists’ Square define the heart of the new district as a shared space for public gathering, civic events and arts programming. The Kunsthalle provides a range of sites and spatial experiences for occupation and transformation by artists, performers and curators.
The Veterans Memorial Museum is sited at the confluence of the Scioto Mile river walk, Broad Street (the primary thoroughfare linking the Peninsula and city) and a new cultural promenade. It functions as a ceremonial parade ground and gathering place for civic and memorial events, an archive of significant artifacts and a teaching space that communicates the importance and experience of service to future generations. The design integrates landscape, architecture and site specific installations to create an entirely new form of memorial museum that serves as a processional, a space of reflection and a highly visible, iconic monument within the city.
