Allied Works, in association with Balmori Associates, is a finalist in a competition to design St. Patrick’s Island in Calgary, Alberta
Sep 12, 2011
The City of Calgary and the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation have shortlisted the team of Balmori Associates, NIPpaysage, Space Syntax, Allied Works, David Skelly, Yann Kersale, and Elizabeth Streb to conceptualize the open space of the significant and under-utilized 31-acre St. Patrick’s Island.
Located in the Bow River in the heart of Calgary, the Island has been an integral part of Calgary’s history from pre-settlement time, through the establishment of the adjacent Fort Calgary by the North West Mounted Police, and since that time has remained an important open space for the city’s residents and visitors. Over recent years use of the island has been in decline and it is now one of the least used Regional Parks in Calgary.
The Island sits adjacent Calgary’s emerging East Village, the place where Calgary was founded and the location of Allied Works’ much-anticipated National Music Centre of Canada, a commission won through an international design competition in 2009.
The other finalists include: Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates; Janet Rosenberg + Associates; O2 Planning + Design; and W Architecture & Landscape Architecture and Civitas.
