The Clyfford Still Museum is devoted to the life and work of one of the 20th century’s most influential and enigmatic painters. Led by Director Dean Sobel, our design team worked closely with curatorial staff and city officials, and Still’s surviving daughters and executors to create an enduring and beautiful home for this internationally significant collection.

The Still Bench provides for moments of respite and contemplation in the presence of Clifford Still’s work. Their simple and elemental design was inspired by the level of refinement in materials and making processes achieved by the museum itself. Topped with un-dyed wool industrial felt, a continuous structural steel surface marries taut and sinuous lines, echoes the horizon, and responds to the force of gravity without overpowering the space around it. The bench has since been re-produced and installed in the Uniqlo City Creative Headquarters in Tokyo, and will be featured in the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus, Ohio.
