The Tribeca Residence is a home for a New York couple and their large extended family. The loft is located within a turn of the century building in TriBeCa, which has been home to civic icons throughout its history. The loft comprises the top three levels of the building and adds a completely redesigned roof garden and penthouse.
While maintaining the character of the building’s historic exterior, the design unifies the formerly separate floor levels by carving a series of voids and garden courts into its interior volume, and by introducing a continuous ribbon of metal panels that unites all levels of the residence. Allied Works partnered with Polich-Tallix foundry to create a surface, reminiscent of book-matched wood, formed by casting molten aluminum onto raw fabric. The experience of the loft balances a sense of order and calm with discovery, as volumes unfold, intersect and overlap in unexpected ways. Each space offers new ways of engaging the city and accommodates a variety of uses from large-scale entertaining to moments of individual reflection.
